A Shepherd Trained for Battle | A Devotional from Psalm 18  | Grow in God Devotionals

David Beheads Goliath the Philistine

Scripture (NKJV)

Psalm 18:17–19 (NKJV)

“He delivered me from my strong enemy,
 From those who hated me,
For they were too strong for me.
They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
But the Lord was my support.
 He also brought me out into a broad place;
He delivered me because He delighted in me.”

Reflection

Before he wore a crown, David wore the dust of the wilderness.

As a shepherd boy, he endured scorching heat, cold nights, isolation, and danger. He protected fragile sheep from predators — lions and bears (1 Samuel 17:34–35). He learned vigilance. He learned courage. He learned responsibility for lives weaker than his own. What seemed like an ordinary, hidden season was actually divine training.

God was shaping a warrior.
 God was shaping a king.
God was shaping the ancestor of Jesus Christ.

David’s life became a succession of battles:

  • The giant Goliath that defied Israel.
  • Years of being hunted by Saul.
  • Wars with the Philistines, Moabites, Ammonites, Arameans, and Edomites.
  • Civil war sparked by his own son, Absalom.
  • Internal rebellion from Sheba.
  • And the painful consequences of his own failure with Bathsheba when complacency opened the door to temptation.

Victory did not mean ease. Triumph did not mean rest from warfare. Each new season brought another confrontation.

And yet, when deliverance finally came, David sang.

Psalm 18 — almost identical to 2 Samuel 22 — opens with this testimony:

“When the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.”

This was not written after one battle.
It was written after a lifetime of them.

When Battles Are Consecutive

Many believers can relate to David’s journey. Just as one crisis resolves, another emerges. Family pressures. Workplace tension. Financial strain. Health struggles. False accusations. Spiritual warfare. It can feel relentless.

Psalm 18 reminds us:

  • God is our Rock when the ground shakes.
  • God is our Fortress when enemies surround us.
  • God trains our hands for battle.
  • God brings us into a broad place.

David declared:

“He brought me out into a spacious place;
He rescued me because He delighted in me.” (Psalm 18:19)

Notice this: the same shepherd who once led sheep to safety was now being led by God to safety.

The wilderness prepared him.
 The battles refined him.
 The deliverances defined him.

And even his failures did not disqualify him — repentance restored him.

Your battles may feel exhausting, but they are not wasted. God uses conflict to deepen dependence, sharpen discernment, and anchor faith. He is not merely the God who allows battle — He is the God who fights in it.

He is Jehovah Sabaoth — the Lord of Hosts, Commander of angel armies.

Core Principle

When enemies are too strong for you, God becomes your strength.
When life feels narrow and suffocating, God brings you into a broad place.

Deliverance is not rooted in your perfection — it is rooted in God’s delight over you.

Application

Ask yourself:

  • Where do I feel outnumbered right now?
  • What problem feels “too strong for me”?
  • Have I been trying to fight in my own strength?

Like David, acknowledge the reality of the battle — but shift your dependence.

Instead of saying:

  • “This is too much for me,”

Say:

  • “This may be too strong for me, but it is not too strong for my God.”

Practical steps:

  • Pray before reacting.
  • Refuse to make decisions from exhaustion.
  • Guard against complacency after victories.
  • Trust that hidden seasons are preparation, not punishment.
  • Expect that God will lead you into a “broad place” in His timing.

The broad place may not come overnight — but it will come.

Prayer

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ,
I come before You acknowledging that some battles in my life feel too strong for me.

Just as You delivered David, deliver me from enemies that appear greater in number and strength. Deliver me from family problems, workplace challenges, financial strain, sickness, loss, legal battles, false accusations, harassment, and every spiritual attack sent to exhaust and discourage me.

When they confront me in the day of calamity, be my support.

Scatter every plot formed against me and my loved ones. Contend with those who contend with me. Fight for me, Lord, and safeguard my life from visible and invisible enemies.

Bring me into a broad place — a place of safety, stability, and peace — where I can say, “The Lord brought me here.”

Place a hedge around me that no evil can penetrate, sealed by the precious blood of Jesus Christ.

You are my Rock.
 You are my Fortress.
 You are my Deliverer.

Amen.
