Gayuma o Lumay: The Dark Side of Love Potions and What the Bible Says
Exposing the Deception Behind Love Spells and Embracing God’s Truth About Love
Love can be one of the most beautiful experiences in life. But what happens when love isn’t born naturally—when it’s forced, manipulated, or conjured through strange rituals? In the Philippines, this is where the ancient practice of gayuma or lumay comes in.
Known across different regions by different names, gayuma is often associated with love potions, charms, or spells designed to make someone fall in love or obsess over another person. For the Tagalog, it’s pang-akit or panghalina. For Visayans, it’s lumay. No matter the term, the purpose remains the same: to control someone else’s emotions, desires, and even thoughts.
How Gayuma and Lumay Are Believed to Work
Practitioners—brujo (sorcerers) or bruja (witches)—use concoctions and rituals to impose attraction, desire, or submission. Some of the practices include:
Animal Parts: Dried bird or crocodile sexual organs mixed into cigarettes. The smoke is then puffed toward the intended victim.
Food & Drink: Potions mixed into meals or beverages so the target unknowingly ingests them.
Perfume or Cologne: Liquids infused with herbs or mystical ingredients and worn like a scent to manipulate emotions.
Incantations (Palipad Hangin): Words whispered into the air, often naming the victim, to cast control.
Ritual Objects: Photos, names, or personal belongings used in incantations or curses.
Dream Manipulation: Victims report sorcerers appearing in their dreams, creating restless nights and torment.
Common symptoms reported by supposed victims include:
Sudden obsession or attraction without reason
Marital or relationship breakdowns without clear cause
Frequent severe headaches or stomach issues with no medical explanation
Sleeplessness, tormenting dreams, or unusual restlessness
In some viral stories, even weddings have been interrupted by suspicions of gayuma being used—like one case where salt was thrown on a groom, and the supposed spell was broken.
Can Science Explain Gayuma?
While no scientific evidence proves the effectiveness of gayuma, some theories suggest that herbs or potions may influence natural hormones or pheromones—like dopamine, serotonin, or oxytocin, which regulate attraction and bonding.
Still, the ethical issue remains: manipulating someone’s free will is not love—it’s control.
What the Bible Says
The Bible strongly warns against sorcery, witchcraft, and manipulation of others through spiritual means:
“There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, a soothsayer, one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who consults the dead. For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD…” (Deuteronomy 18:10–12, NASB)
“But the one who practices sorcery, the idolaters, and all liars—their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8, NASB)
“Submit therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7, NASB)
God makes it clear: He values free will, truth, and purity in relationships. Anything that twists or manipulates another’s heart through spells or potions is considered detestable and dangerous.
What to Do if You Suspect You Are a Victim
If you or someone you know suspects they’re being targeted by gayuma or similar practices, here are steps you can take:
Pray for Deliverance
Ask God to break any ungodly ties, curses, or manipulations over your life. Pray in the name of Jesus Christ for protection and clarity.Renounce Any Connection
Out loud, declare that you reject and cancel any involvement in witchcraft, knowingly or unknowingly.
“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us…” (Galatians 3:13, NASB)Guard Your Heart and Mind
Stay rooted in Scripture. Read passages like Psalm 91 and Ephesians 6:10–18 (the Armor of God) for strength and assurance.Use Discernment in Relationships
Be cautious if someone behaves suspiciously or seems to be manipulating your choices. Remember: real love is not forced—it grows freely.Seek Spiritual Support
Talk to a trusted pastor, priest, or prayer group for spiritual covering and deliverance prayers.
Final Thoughts
Gayuma or lumay may be part of Filipino folklore and culture, but behind its mysterious charm lies a deeper truth: it is manipulation, not love. Whether one believes in its power or not, the ethical and spiritual dangers are real.
As Scripture reminds us, love should be sincere, pure, and free—not born of coercion, potions, or whispered spells. If you ever suspect you’re under spiritual attack, stand firm in prayer, in faith, and in the Word of God.
“For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.” (2 Timothy 1:7, NASB)
Spiritual Warfare Prayer Against Gayuma, Lumay, and Manipulation
Heavenly Father,
I come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior. I thank You that Your Word says: “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). Today, I stand on that promise and resist every form of witchcraft, manipulation, and ungodly control trying to come against me or my loved ones.
Lord, I renounce and break every curse, incantation, spell, potion, perfume, food, drink, or smoke that has been used to manipulate me. I cancel every whispered word of sorcery, every palipad hangin, every ritual involving my name, my photo, or my belongings. By the blood of Jesus, I declare these weapons powerless, for “no weapon formed against me shall prosper” (Isaiah 54:17).
I bind every spirit of obsession, confusion, sleeplessness, torment, and restlessness sent against me. I command every dark spirit behind gayuma, lumay, and manipulation to leave me now, in the name of Jesus Christ. I declare that my body, mind, emotions, and spirit belong to God alone.
Father, I ask You to cover me with the precious blood of Jesus. Surround me with Your warrior angels to fight on my behalf. Clothe me in the full armor of God—belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, sword of the Spirit, and feet prepared with the gospel of peace (Ephesians 6:10–18).
Lord, I declare that my heart and free will are protected in Christ. I reject counterfeit love and manipulation. I receive only the love that comes from You—pure, sincere, and free. For it is written: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).
I cancel every plan of the enemy to destroy my relationships, my health, my peace, and my future. I declare freedom, healing, and restoration over my life. I claim Galatians 3:13—that Christ has redeemed me from the curse.
Thank You, Lord, that I am safe in You. I rest in Your presence and trust in Your power to deliver me completely.
In Jesus’ mighty name I pray,
Amen.
