Facing the Wolf Spirit: A Personal Reflection on Deliverance and Spiritual Discernment | Grow in God Devotionals

wolf eye

This past week, I experienced a powerful deliverance from the spirit of fear. I felt lighter, freer, and more at peace than I had in a long time. But today, when I closed my eyes in prayer, I saw a shadowy, wolf-like silhouette. Immediately, I sensed that God was revealing to me another kind of spirit that I need to renounce and counter in the name of Jesus.

It reminded me that deliverance is often a journey — one step at a time, uncovering and confronting the spiritual forces that try to influence our lives.

Earlier, while praying for deliverance in my neighbourhood, I noticed a woman watching me unusually and intently. A heavy feeling lingered in my spirit, and I sensed what could be an evil eye or spiritual oppression. I even suspected she might be operating in witchcraft. I prayed silently against it and rebuked any darkness I perceived. When I looked directly at her, she tried to turn away but glanced back once more, and I knew I had to remain vigilant in prayer.

Understanding the Wolf Spirit in Deliverance

The “wolf spirit” can have multiple layers of meaning in a spiritual context. It can represent an internal struggle — the battle between good and evil within ourselves. It can also signify external spiritual opposition, a predatory, deceptive, or destructive force seeking to harm believers.

The Two Wolves Parable: The Internal Struggle

An old Cherokee tale tells of two wolves fighting inside each person:

  • The good wolf embodies love, peace, hope, and godly character.
  • The evil wolf embodies anger, jealousy, selfishness, and destructive tendencies.

The wolf that wins is the one we feed with our thoughts and actions. Spiritually, this reminds us that our daily choices and prayers cultivate either God’s presence or destructive patterns in our lives.

Wolf Spirit as Demonic Influence or False Teaching

In deliverance ministry, the wolf spirit can also symbolize demonic oppression or false teaching. The Bible warns of “ravenous wolves in sheep’s clothing” (Matthew 7:15; Acts 20:29) who appear harmless but seek to destroy. Wolves — or those influenced by them — often manipulate others through fear, false doctrines, pride, or personal gain.

Key Traits of the Wolf Spirit (Biblical Perspective)

  • Deception and Hypocrisy: Appears harmless but hides destructive intentions.
  • Ravenous and Destructive: Seeks to devour spiritually or emotionally.
  • False Teaching and Manipulation: Twists truth for control.
  • Self-Serving Motives: Focuses on personal gain over the care of others.
  • Lack of Righteous Fruit: Actions reveal their nature, lacking love, joy, peace, and patience.
  • Sneaky and Persistent: Operates in secret, striking unexpectedly.

Telltale Signs of a Wolf Spirit in Leadership

The Bible calls us to feed the flock of God (John 21:15–17). A true shepherd draws people closer to Jesus, nourishes them spiritually, and protects them from deception. Wolves, however, seek to scatter, control, or exploit the sheep.

How to discern a wolf leader:

  1. Examine the Fruit: Are they pointing people to Jesus, or to themselves?
  2. Self-Centeredness: Do they seek fame, influence, or wealth?
  3. Manipulation and Accusation: Do they accuse and condemn rather than restore?
  4. Commercialising the Gospel: Selling miracles, handkerchiefs, or other gimmicks for profit is a red flag.
  5. Facade and Titles: Love for religious titles and opulent lifestyles often hides a heart far from God.
  6. Selective Teaching: They preach prosperity or success, not sin, repentance, or righteousness.

Scriptural guidance:

  • Matthew 7:15 — Warns against deceptive people who appear harmless.
  • Matthew 10:16 — Jesus sends disciples as sheep among wolves, to be wise yet innocent.
  • Acts 20:29 — Paul warns elders of savage wolves seeking to devour the flock.
  • Isaiah 11:6; 65:25 — Offers hope of a Messianic age where even predators and prey coexist in peace.
  • Jeremiah 5:6; Ezekiel 22:27; Zephaniah 3:3 — Warn of corrupt leaders who prey on the vulnerable.

Practical Steps for Countering the Wolf Spirit

From my own experience, a few strategies have been invaluable:

  1. Prayer and Renunciation: Call out the spirit in the name of Jesus and declare freedom.
  2. Spiritual Discernment: Observe impressions, feelings, and signs without fear, letting the Holy Spirit guide your understanding.
  3. Scripture Alignment: Use God’s Word as the ultimate authority against deception and darkness.
  4. Persistent Vigilance: Stay alert in prayer, especially in interactions with people whose intentions feel heavy or unsettling.

Final Reflection

Deliverance is a journey, and the wolf spirit reminds us that vigilance, discernment, and prayer are essential. Even when shadows appear, when heavy presences linger, or when false leaders emerge, we can stand firm. Renounce what is not of God, lean on the Good Shepherd, and continue to feed and protect the flock entrusted to your care.

We may encounter wolves — inside or outside the church — but through Jesus, we have the authority, guidance, and protection to overcome deception and walk in spiritual freedom.
